Tomoyuki Sugano Notches 10th Win as Orioles Top Mariners 5 3 in Rain Soaked Showdown

Sugano Secures 10th Win as Orioles Outlast Mariners in Rain-Delayed Victory

BALTIMORE — Rookie right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano delivered another poised performance Thursday night, guiding the Baltimore Orioles to a 5–3 win over the Seattle Mariners in a game interrupted by a 2-hour, 18-minute rain delay.

The 35-year-old from Japan worked 5 1/3 efficient innings, allowing just two runs on 81 pitches before the storm rolled in. It marked Sugano’s second consecutive win and his 10th of the season, improving to 3-0 with a 2.31 ERA over his last four starts.

“It’s all about staying focused no matter the circumstances,” Sugano said through an interpreter. “Even with the delay, I wanted to give the team a chance to win.”

A Fourth-Inning Breakthrough

The Orioles cracked the game open in the fourth against Seattle starter Logan Evans. Jordan Westburg scored on a wild pitch, and chaos ensued when Evans mishandled catcher Mitch Garver’s throw, allowing Ryan Mountcastle to take third. A double steal brought Mountcastle home, and Jeremiah Jackson followed with a sharp RBI single.

Baltimore padded the lead in the fifth with Gunnar Henderson’s run-scoring double and Mountcastle’s sacrifice fly, chasing Evans after just four innings — matching the shortest outing of his young career.

Mariners’ Late Push

Seattle’s Julio Rodríguez, quiet before the delay, jolted the offense back to life by smashing reliever Rico Garcia’s fourth pitch into the right-center bleachers for a two-run homer in the sixth. But the Mariners, who entered the game riding the momentum of an eight-game win streak before dropping the last two, couldn’t complete the comeback.

Without slugger Cal Raleigh — the MLB home run leader with 45, given a rare day off — Seattle’s lineup lacked its usual punch. Raleigh appeared only as a pinch-hitter in the ninth, drawing a walk.

Closing It Out

Baltimore’s bullpen held firm, with Keegan Akin escaping a seventh-inning jam to keep the score at 5–2. Dietrich Enns allowed an RBI groundout in the ninth but retired Josh Naylor on one pitch to lock down his first save since 2021.

The win moves the Orioles another step forward in the AL East race, while Seattle’s loss dropped them 1½ games behind the division-leading Houston Astros.

Up Next:
The Mariners head to New York to face the Mets, with Luis Castillo (8–6, 3.19 ERA) set to start. The Orioles travel to Houston, where their Friday night starter remains undecided.
