The Illinois Fighting Illini offensive line returns a wealth of experience in 2025, but depth remains critical in the unforgiving trenches of the Big Ten. That’s where senior guard Dezmond Schuster comes in—a versatile lineman whose size, athleticism, and flexibility make him an invaluable asset for Bret Bielema’s squad.
A Versatile Force in the Trenches
At 6-foot-5 and 335 pounds, Schuster combines rare power with surprising agility. His long arms and fluid movement allow him to handle edge rushers, while his brute strength makes him a force against interior defensive tackles. A former standout at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, he proved early in his career that he could line up across multiple spots on the offensive front, a skillset that has translated seamlessly to Illinois. That versatility gives the Illini coaching staff a trusted option to plug into the lineup wherever needed.
The Road to Champaign
Hailing from Gonzales, Louisiana, Schuster’s journey to the Big Ten wasn’t straightforward. After excelling at East Ascension High School, he spent two years at Hutchinson CC, where he became one of the nation’s most sought-after JUCO linemen. Rated ESPN’s top junior college guard, Schuster capped his JUCO career with first-team All-KJCCC honors in 2022.
Injuries delayed his Illinois debut—he missed the entire 2023 season—but he rebounded in 2024, appearing in five games as a reliable reserve. Whether filling in at guard or tackle, he showcased both toughness and adaptability.
Outlook for 2025
With all five starters returning from Illinois’ 10-win campaign, Schuster begins the year as a “sixth man” on the line. Yet his value extends far beyond a backup role. His ability to slide into multiple positions provides the Illini with a crucial insurance policy, especially in a league where physical play up front often determines success. During fall camp, he even stepped in for injured starter JC Davis, proving he can hold his own with the first unit.
As one Big Ten analyst, Gerry DiNardo, noted: “They bend, they’re flexible, they’re deep. They probably have eight guys that can play right now.” Schuster is at the heart of that depth and will play a vital role in keeping Illinois’ offensive front strong and steady throughout the 2025 season.
