After a narrow 2–1 loss to St. Louis on Monday night, the Colorado Rockies will look to snap their latest skid and secure elusive win No. 31 on Tuesday. At 30–88, the Rockies have now endured eight-game losing streaks five different times this season, including the current slide that began on August 3 against Pittsburgh.
The season series with the Cardinals is now even at 2–2 after Colorado claimed a three-game set at Coors Field earlier this year. With two games remaining in St. Louis, both clubs will be fighting for the edge.
Taking the mound for the Rockies is left-hander Kyle Freeland (2–12, 5.53 ERA), making his 22nd start of the season. Freeland is coming off two challenging outings — a short three-inning effort on July 30 while under the weather, followed by an Aug. 6 start against Toronto in which he surrendered six runs on seven hits. Control has been an issue, with two walks, two hit batters, and four strikeouts in just 4 2/3 innings during that game.
For the Cardinals, Matthew Liberatore (6–9, 3.98 ERA) will get the start. The 25-year-old southpaw, now in his fourth MLB season and first as a full-time starter, has 85 strikeouts against 27 walks over 113 innings this year. Liberatore hasn’t recorded a win since June 29 — also the last time he pitched beyond the fifth inning.
Rain has been a constant presence in St. Louis today, leaving the Busch Stadium field damp and heavy. Rockies broadcaster Ryan Spilborghs has been documenting the wet conditions, but skies appear to be clearing as first pitch approaches.
