Rays Look to Triple A Durham for Much Needed Offensive Boost

Rays Call on Bob Seymour to Jumpstart Slumping Offense

After five years grinding through the minor leagues, Bob Seymour is finally getting his shot. The 26-year-old first baseman, one of the Tampa Bay Rays’ most potent power bats in Triple-A, is set to join the big-league club Friday in San Francisco for the start of a three-game series against the Giants.

The move comes at a desperate time for Tampa Bay. Since their 11–3 win over the Orioles on June 28, the Rays have gone just 12–27, plummeting from a half-game out of first in the AL East to 11½ games behind the Toronto Blue Jays. Their only realistic path to October now is through the AL wild card, where they sit 5½ games back of the Yankees with five teams ahead of them.

A Season Gone Cold

The post–June 28 collapse has been fueled by a scoring drought. Since the All-Star break, the Rays own the worst offensive totals in the American League — just 97 runs and 91 RBIs in 25 games. Over the same span, they’ve allowed 176 runs while scoring only 144, a minus-32 run differential.

The lone bright spot has been rookie third baseman Junior Caminero, who’s been scorching hot with 14 home runs and 33 RBIs since late June. But without added firepower, the Rays’ postseason hopes are fading fast.

Enter Bob Seymour

Seymour has been a force in Durham’s lineup, leading Triple-A in home runs with 30 to go along with 87 RBIs in 105 games. His 2025 slash line — .263/.327/.553/.880 — speaks to both his power and consistency.

Drafted in the 13th round out of Wake Forest in 2021, Seymour has built an impressive minor league résumé: 89 home runs, 320 RBIs, and a career .283 average over 410 games. Now, the Rays are banking on him to bring that production to a major-league lineup in desperate need of a jolt.

High Stakes for a Late Push

The Rays stood pat at the trade deadline, opting not to add a big bat to support Caminero. That decision now places even greater pressure on Seymour’s debut. If his power can translate quickly to the majors, Tampa Bay might claw back into the wild card race.

For Seymour, it’s the culmination of years of persistence — and for the Rays, it could be the move that keeps their October dreams alive.
