Cam Thomas Weighs $6M Deal with Nets, Eyes 2026 Free Agency Payday
Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas is in no rush to lock in a long-term deal. The 23-year-old restricted free agent is reportedly leaning toward playing next season on a $6 million qualifying offer, keeping his options open for an unrestricted free agency run in 2026.
NBA insider Jake Fischer reports:
“Sources also say Thomas is showing an increasing interest in playing out next season on a $6 million qualifier for the right to enjoy true free agency next summer.”
According to Fischer, the Nets haven’t made an aggressive push to secure Thomas on a multi-year contract. Per ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Thomas has until October 1 to sign the one-year qualifying offer for the 2025–26 season.
Value Still a Question Mark
Thomas’ free agent market remains difficult to pin down. Fred Katz of The Athletic recently polled 16 NBA executives about his value, and the results reflected uncertainty—even among top decision-makers.
Part of the intrigue comes from his production in limited action. Last season, Thomas averaged 24.0 points and 3.8 assists on 43.8% shooting from the field, 34.9% from three, and 88.1% from the line. But he appeared in only 25 games due to hamstring injuries.
Strengths and Weaknesses
There’s no doubt Thomas can score—he’s one of the league’s more dynamic self-creators. But his playmaking and defense are still works in progress. He owns career averages of 2.1 assists against 1.4 turnovers, and the Nets posted a 120.6 defensive rating with him on the court last season—the worst mark on the team.
Betting on Himself
By taking the one-year deal, Thomas would give himself a chance to show durability and all-around growth before hitting the market without restrictions. In an era where flexibility and cap space are prized, a strong, healthy season could position him for a major payday in summer 2026.
For now, the ball is in Thomas’ court—literally and figuratively.
